About Caliente
Living in Caliente
A railroad town named for hot springs
Caliente was founded in 1901 on the Culverwell Ranch and named for nearby hot springs (caliente is Spanish for "hot"). The Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, later Union Pacific, arrived in 1905, and the town once had more than 5,000 residents before rail dieselization in the late 1940s. With 990 residents at the 2020 census, Caliente is the least populated incorporated city in Nevada, yet it is still Lincoln County's largest town; the county seat is Pioche. Lincoln County had 4,499 residents in 2020 and covers 10,637 square miles.
The Caliente depot
The Mission Revival Caliente depot was built in 1923 as a railroad division point with a hotel upstairs, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It was an Amtrak Desert Wind stop until 1997 and today holds city offices.
Parks and the outdoors
- Kershaw-Ryan State Park: about two miles south of town at the north end of Rainbow Canyon, with canyon walls up to 700 feet high, a spring-fed wading pool, 14 miles of trails and a campground. Homesteaded in 1873, it became one of Nevada's first state parks in 1935.
- Cathedral Gorge State Park: on US-93 near Panaca between Caliente and Pioche, with spires and slot-like caves carved from soft bentonite clay. It was one of Nevada's four original state parks in 1935.
- More nearby: about 30 miles of mountain bike trails, rock climbing in Rainbow Canyon and the Big Rocks Wilderness, and fishing at Eagle Valley Reservoir.
