The upper end of the Moapa Valley
Moapa, also called Moapa Town, is an unincorporated town and census-designated place governed by a town advisory board. It had 1,006 residents at the 2020 census, compared with 1,025 in 2010, and the CDP covers 17.85 square miles. The first permanent settlement here was made in 1865. Moapa sits at the upper end of the Moapa Valley, which runs about 40 miles, roughly 12 miles northwest of Logandale, and silent films were shot around the town in the 1920s.
Springs, the Muddy River and the wildlife refuge
Artesian springs in the Warm Springs area feed the Muddy River and supply most of the valley's water through the Moapa Valley Water District, which serves Overton, Logandale and Moapa. The Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge, about 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas, was established in 1979 on 136 acres to protect the endangered Moapa dace. Its thermal springs feed streams that support species found nowhere else in the world.
Landmarks and energy
The former Reid Gardner coal power plant near Moapa closed between 2014 and 2017 and has been redeveloped as a battery energy storage site. The 1,400-foot Moapa Entravision Tower near town is Nevada's second-tallest structure.
Getting around and health care
State Route 169, the Moapa Valley's main road, meets I-15 at exit 93, about 26 miles west-southwest of Mesquite. Mesa View Regional Hospital in Mesquite is the regional hospital serving the Moapa Valley.
