About Searchlight
Living in Searchlight
A gold-rush town
Searchlight was founded after George Frederick Colton found gold there on May 6, 1897. Legend says Colton remarked that it would take a searchlight to find gold there, which gave the town its name. Between 1907 and 1910 its mines produced gold and other minerals in quantity, and the town of about 1,500 was larger than Las Vegas at the time. Former U.S. Senator Harry Reid was born and raised in Searchlight. Today it is an unincorporated town and census-designated place with 445 residents at the 2020 census, at an elevation of about 3,547 feet.
Getting around
U.S. Route 95 runs through Searchlight about 20 miles north of the California border. In town, SR 164 (Nipton Road) and Cottonwood Cove Road branch off. Silver Rider Transit runs express bus service from Searchlight to Laughlin and Las Vegas.
Lake Mohave and Cottonwood Cove
Cottonwood Cove Road leads east to Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave, which has a resort and marina within Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Lake Mohave is about 67 miles long, backed by Davis Dam on the Colorado River, and holds trout, bass, crappie and catfish.
